Why Renew Your Vows?
Vow renewals are not just for milestone anniversaries like 25 or 50 years. They are a heartfelt way to celebrate your journey together, especially for couples who married during the pandemic. Renewing your vows allows you to reaffirm your love and commitment in a more relaxed setting, and it can be a beautiful reminder of how far you've come and a celebration of the future you continue to build together. It is also an opportunity to include family and friends who couldn't attend your original ceremony, creating a new set of cherished memories (and photo ops!).
Considerations for Planning Your Vow Renewal
When planning a vow renewal, the possibilities are endless, but it's essential to consider what matters most to you as a couple. Think about the vibe you want to create—whether it's an intimate gathering or a grand celebration. Decide on a location that holds significance, such as the place you first met or a venue that was unavailable during your initial wedding, a local spot you love to go together, or even your parents backyard. Consider the time of year and how it aligns with your vision. If you're planning a vow renewal in Chicago, think about the city's vibrant seasons (and when it's cold!) and choose a date that complements your desired atmosphere.
We decided to hold a small vow renewal ceremony on our September wedding date at one of our parents' homes, with only our parents present and Danica's brother officiating. The other guests joined us later at Hidden Creek Estates for cocktail hour, games, and dinner. We worked with SS Designs to create an invitation suite with all of our details - including hand lettered names at each place setting1
Crafting a Vow Renewal Budget

Budgeting for a vow renewal doesn't have to be daunting. Start by determining your priorities—whether it's the venue, food, or entertainment. A vow renewal can be as simple or elaborate as you wish. Allocate funds for elements that will make the day special for you, such as a photographer to capture the moments, a florist for beautiful arrangements, or a caterer to provide a memorable meal. Remember, the focus is on celebrating your love, so prioritize what feels meaningful to you both.
Being self-proclaimed food enthusiasts and cocktail connoisseurs, we understood the importance of having a dinner and drink menu that showcased our favorites while being locally-sourced and sustainable. We collaborated with the chef at Hidden Creek to create such a menu. Additionally, we decided to invest in a photographer to capture the day's magic, choosing Kailee Rei Photography for their style that matched our moody-speakeasy atmosphere!
Ways to Honor Your Wedding Day
Incorporating elements from your original wedding day can add a sentimental touch to your vow renewal. Consider wearing a piece of your wedding attire, such as your veil or cufflinks. Play the same song you first danced to as a married couple. You might also recreate your wedding bouquet or incorporate similar flowers into the décor. Sharing a slideshow of your wedding photos can be a nostalgic way to reflect on your journey. These callbacks not only honor your past but also highlight the growth and strength of your relationship.

We integrated our wedding day in several ways! Our favorite easter egg was the cake cutting song lyrics printed on fabric and draped over the chairs at the ceremony (these are now displayed in our home!). We also referenced our late-night snack, a soft-pretzel bar, by offering pretzel bites with various sauces and dips as an appetizer at the vow renewal. Danica wore her wedding shoes and jewelry, while Collin wore his wedding day watch.
Personalizing Your Vows
One of the most intimate parts of a vow renewal is the exchange of vows. This is your chance to express how your love has evolved and what your partner means to you now. Reflect on the experiences you've shared, the challenges you've overcome, and the dreams you continue to pursue together. Whether you write new vows or revisit the ones from your wedding, make them personal and heartfelt. This is your moment to speak from the heart and celebrate the unique bond you share.
Creating a Memorable Celebration
Your vow renewal is a celebration of love, so make it memorable for both you and your guests. Consider incorporating activities that reflect your personalities, such as a wine tasting, a dance-off, or a themed dinner. If you're hosting a vow renewal in Chicago, take advantage of the city's cultural offerings, like a jazz band or a rooftop venue with stunning skyline views. Whatever you choose, ensure it resonates with who you are as a couple and leaves everyone with lasting memories!

To make our vow renewal both memorable and sustainable, we offered paper and twine for guests to craft and wrap their own bouquets using flowers from our arrangements and centerpieces. Our florist, Event Floral, collaborated with us to supply all the materials, allowing each guest to take home a small memento. (Event Floral also supplied the centerpieces to enhance our sustainability efforts!)
Planning a 5-year vow renewal is a beautiful way to celebrate your love and commitment, especially for couples who married during the pandemic. By considering what matters most to you, setting a realistic budget, and finding meaningful ways to honor your wedding day, you can create a celebration that reflects your unique journey. Whether you're planning a vow renewal in Chicago, Rockford, or anywhere else, remember that the day is about celebrating your enduring love and the future you continue to build together.
